Hello Liz The only problem is that Pelagie was married to Francois Broussard and living at Atakapas for the 1769 census; so she wouldn't be the Pelagie, sister to Charles, at Cabanocé and l'Acension for 1769 & 1770 censuses. Thanks Tommy -----Original Message----- From: T. Arthur Henault My CHAUVIN's did not come over on the May Flower, They missed the boat, and had to wait for the next one, it was called the June Bug. When the got off the Boat, they were escorted to a densely wooded area where they would pitch their tents. Soon! it was decided that they needed to build some houses and they all helped each other. My Chauvins/Shovans, had big dreams, so their house was a four seater, two on each side. I guess that they must have been expecting company! My GGG-GT Uncle Joseph Joseph Chauvin Liked to play jokes on people. He would wait until someone went out to use the house, and then go into the other side, kneel down and in an angry voice yell, - Hey! stop that, can't you see that i am painting down here! Well that did not go over very good with my GGGG-Grandmother Elizabeth Chauvin/ Shovin. and she was determined to teach her son Joseph Joseph a lesson. So she got the rest of the family together to make their plan, They waited until they were sure that Joseph Joseph had to use the house, and as soon as he stepped inside, they all started nailing the door shut! J.J. was very surprised by this, but mother-nature was calling, and he looked down at the seats only to find that they had been boarded up! and then he looked over toward the corner of the house, and saw a bucket of paint and a big paint brush. with a sign that read, Let us know when you are done painting and we will let you out! Well they made him stay in there for about 5 hours before letting him out. and as the story go's, he was covered with more than paint when he came out. The morel of this story is, NEVER mess around with Mother Chauvin! Moose Hugs Tommy

What the Acadian Memorial has on the family http://www.acadianmemorial.org/english/ensembleencoreset.html ======================================= Record Detail Given Names: François Surname: Broussard (Brossard) Sobriquet: Date of Birth: 1741 Birthplace:Acadia Baptised At: Date of Baptism: Mother:Agnès (Nanette) Thibodeau Father:Joseph Broussard dit Beausoleil Marriage: Married Pélagie Landry, daughter of Pierre Landry and Caroline Landry. Children: Olidon (sometimes Odilon) (born January 2, 1771), Théophile (born March 5, 1773), Jean François (baptized May 5, 1776), Joseph Sarazin (born May 16, 1777), François Isidore (born January 2, 1779), Pelagie (born January 15, 1781) Exile:Louisiana: Identified in the census of April 25, 1766, as a resident of the Bayou Tortue settlement (near present-day Broussard) in the Attakapas District. He was the only member of his household. The census lists two persons by the name of François Broussard in the Bayou Tortue settlement and indicates that one of them was a "gardener." Without additional information, it is impossible to positively identify the gardener. A general census of the Attakapas District compiled around 1769 indicates that François Broussard was the twenty-three-year-old head of a household that included the following persons: his wife, who is not named in the census report; Claude Broussard, his brother, 21 years old; Amand (Armand) Broussard, his brother, 19 years old; Magdeleine (Magdeleyne) Broussard, no relationship indicated, 16 years old; and Elizabeth Broussard, no relationship indicated, 6 years old. François Broussard and his family owned thirty-one cows, ten horses, and fifteen hogs. Signed with his mark (he was illiterate) an unconditional oath of allegiance to Spain at the Attakapas District, December 8, 1769. On December 5, 1770, during Louisiana's severe grain shortage, Jean Bérard listed him among the Attakapas settlers having unhusked corn for sale. François Broussard had twenty barrels of corn, according to the list. The 1771 census of the Attakapas District indicates that his household included himself, his wife, Amant Broussard, Isabelle Landry, an unidentified eight-year-old girl, and an unidentified two-month-old boy. His family owned twenty-eight cattle and seven horses. His family also occupied a parcel land measuring seven arpents frontage, but they did not hold a title to it. Broussard participated in the election to select a second sindic for the construction of a church in the Attakapas District, May 16, 1773. The June 20, 1774, muster roll indicates that he was a fusilier in the Attakapas District militia. The October 30, 1774, census of the Attakapas District indicates that his household included his wife and two unidentified children. Accused of theft by Commandant Alexandre DeClouet, September 26, 1776. The members of his household owned thirty-six cows, six horses or mules, and ten pigs. The May 10, 1777, muster roll indicates that he was a fusilier in the Attakapas District militia. Listed in the 1789 muster roll as a member of the Attakapas District militia unit. On October 20, 1789, he joined with eight other Attakapas District ranchers in signing a contract to supply New Orleans with beef for one year. The May 1803 census of the Vermilion area of the Attakapas District indicates that he was the fifty-six-year-old head of a household that included Pélagie Landry (Landrie), his fifty-four-year-old wife. He and his wife occupied a tract of land with thirty-five arpents frontage. They owned 700 semi-wild beef cattle and 60 domesticated cattle. They also owned the following slaves: Thomas, 50 years old; Leuder, 23 years old; Martin, 19 years old; Jean-Louis, 11 years old; Célestin, 7 years old; Charles, 5 years old; Godfrey, 4 years old; Charlotte, 42 years old; Hélène, 25 years old; Félicité, 23 years old; Madeleine, 17 years old; Angélique, 16 years old; Pte. Félicité, 10 years old; Marie, 7 years old; Messite, 4 yeaers old; Clarisse, 2 years old; and Hortense, 1 year old. Cousins It has been a while since we have done one of these. Guidlines below. Any suggestions to improve please share. We choose a know brickwall or someone with major questions. We are going to start with Pelangie Landry who married Francois Broussard. (next one will be Susanne Boudreau who married Pierre-Olivier Benoit) First share everything you have on the couple. no telling what will little bit will provide the clue we need. Then turn around and share anything you have on all people with that name of about the right age. Things like parents & grandparents, where they lived, spouce, birth of 1st & last child. We need to cover the period when ours was married to Francois. If we have no luck we will expand our search to widows of Landries & because of the period/location Pelangies whose mother was a Landry. Good hunting. Let's hope you can pick up some details. Paul Le B l'Ascension Louisiane
from www.acadiansingray.com (click on the left sidebar under "families," then choose Landry & family history links) I don't know how accurate it all is, but the site author certainly seems to hit a lot of major & not-so major sources w/his extensive research. There are other Pelagies there as well - if you use a "find" search, use an accent on the first 'e' & also try w/o the accent-- "born c1749, probably Pigiguit; daughter of Charles LANDRY & Marie LEBLANC; sister of Anne, Charles, Francois, Jacques, Joseph, Marie, & Pierre-Amand; exiled to MD 1755, age 6; in report of Acadians at Oxford, MD, Jul 1763, with brothers; arrived LA 1766, age 17; in Cabanocé census, 1769, left [east] bank, age 20, with family of brother Charles; in Ascension census, 1770, left [east] bank, age 20, with brother Charles; moved to Atakapas District; married, age 21, Francois BROUSSARD, son of Joseph BROUSSARD dit Beausoleil & Agnès THIBODEAUX of Petitcoudiac, c1770, probably Atakapas; in Atakapas census, 1771, unnamed, age 26[sic, probably 22], with husband, brother-in-law Amant BROUSSARD, Isabelle [probably sister-in-law Hélène] LANDRY, 1 son, & 1 daughter; in Atakapas census, 1774, unnamed, with husband & 2 children; in Atakapas census, 1777, age 28, with husband, 3 sons, & orphan Elizabeth BROUSSARD; in Atakapas census, 1781, unnamed, with husband & 11 others; in Atakapas census, 1785, unnamed, with husband & 8 others; died Lafayette Parish 13 Dec 1831, age 85[sic], a widow; succession record dated 19 Jan 1832, Lafayette Parish courthouse" footnote: "Wall of Names, 19, calls her Pélagie LANDRY; Hébert, D.,Southwest LA Records, 3:393 (Laf.Ch.: v.3, p.6), her death/burial record, calls her Pélagie LANDRY, m. d.Francois BROUSSARD, says she died "at age 85 yrs." but does not give her parents' names; Hébert, D.,Southwest LA Records, 3:393 (Laf.Ct.Hse.: Succ. #214), her succession record, calls her Pélagie LANDRY, m. Francois BROUSSARD, & lists her many BROUSSARD heirs. Her estimated birth year is taken from the ages found in the Cabanocé census of 1769 & the Atakapas census of 1777, not from her burial record, which, amazingly, is not too far off." Alice You are following an even earlier tradition. Our first home in North America "The Habitat" was built in France. It was knocked down. Put in the ship hold. In 1604 it was first reassembled on an island in the mouth of the St-Croix river on the present boundary between Maine & New Brunswick. The next year it was moved to near what would become Port Royal, Acadie. Alice, We CHAUVIN descendants are so resilient. Thankfully we have the blood of our CHAUVIN "Courier de Bois" ancestors. It is simply "Back to Basics". Consider the resilience a gift from our ancestors...although I wish you were not forced into such a position in this day and age.
