    1. [ACADIAN] News : History, Akers go together (New Iberia, LA)
    2. Paul L LeBlanc
    3. Thanks Terry. Article follows James is our cousin I visit with everytime I am in St-Martinville. You may have met him if you ever took his tour of St-Martin Church. He has taken his non-Acadian Akers name back to the Detroit river valley after the end of the French & Indian war & we have not been able to take it back any further. Paul -----Original Message----- From: terrydupuis8t@aol.com an article on James Akers in the Daily Iberian News : History, Akers go together (New Iberia, LA) Source: iberianet.com ======================================== http://www.iberianet.com/articles/2011/01/16/news/doc4d32780213206486986833.txt History, Akers go together BY PATRICK FLANAGAN THE DAILY IBERIAN ST. MARTINVILLE — The life of James Akers has been defined by history, from the day of his birth to the present. Akers said he was born on a “terrible day” — Dec. 8, 1941 — the day after the Pearl Harbor bombing and the day that the U.S. declared war on the Axis Powers, thus beginning America’s involvement in World War II. “The only good thing about it was it was the same day as the Feast of the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary,” Akers said. Although Akers never attended college, he said he credits his capacity and love for history to the handiwork of two “excellent” teachers at St. Martinville High School who molded him for a life of research and discovery of history’s many secrets. Those teachers were Mrs. George Eastin and Elma Hebert Resweber, Akers said. Akers said his historical mind was cultivated from a lifelong love of reading. “I’m an avid reader,” he said. “Even today, at 69 years old, I read at least 10 books a year, along with newspapers, periodicals and magazines.” Yet, Akers’ expertise centers around his hometown, St. Martinville, of which his knowledge is almost limitless. “I spent a lot of time researching at the courthouse and the church,” he said. “And any time a new tourist site opens up, I’m there. While Akers has worked as a docent for Acadian Memorial for the past eight years, he said his work history is expansive, including stints as a waiter, a reporter with the Teche News, and a tour guide at St. Martin de Tours Catholic Church. Akers true contribution to the historical knowledge of St. Martinville came in 1971 when he founded the Petit Paris Museum, where he said he worked until 1980. Likewise, Akers was a curator for the Maison Oliver home at the Longfellow-Evangeline State Park between 1976 and 1980. In 1981, Akers left St. Martinville for Baton Rouge, where he worked for the K-Mart Corp. until 1994. By the mid-1990s, Akers had returned to St. Martinville and began his career as a docent for the Acadian Memorial museum, where he is currently working. St. Martinville Department of Tourism Director Brenda Comeaux Trahan, who also is the curator at Acadian Memorial, said Akers has been an “invaluable” asset to the museum. She said anytime there’s a question about the city’s past, Akers is her go-to-man, adding, “he’s always done enough research to trust his opinion on questions we have about this area.” “James really loves being involved in the history of this unique city,” she said. “You can see it as he tells a story to the tourists here. And they sense it and see it. They even call for him and ask for him to be their guide.” Akers’ historical involvement took on a new dimension four years ago when he helped organize “L’Ordre du Bon Temps,” or, “The Order of Good Times.” Each October, Akers said he takes on the persona of Samuel de Champagne, the founder of Nova Scotia. Dressed in traditional attire, including a black leather hat with gold plumage and a rapier, Akers portrays Champagne at the Order’s annual feast, which consists of about 40 men and women, who also are decked out in the clothing of the early-17th century. “Samuel de Champagne started the first supper club in the New World in 1604,” Akers said. “Because of the long winters, the men were confined inside. You could go stir crazy stuck in a log cabin for months. They prepared food for a big banquet to keep the men busy. So each year we get a different French chef, and all the founders of the Acadian Memorial dress as Acadian men and women or Indian men and women and eat and drink wine.” If you know someone who lives in the Teche Area who would make an interesting weekend profile, please submit his or her name for consideration. 3. Thanks Liz Keep the corrections coming. I promise to try & remember to check & fix the "small" details. When I was starting out, I like everyone else, took what I could find not realizing people were guessing or had hidden agendas. There are some people who want to make everyone "Grand-Pre" "peasant" farmers. One of my favorites was a person who provided exact death dates for everyone so he could SAY you copied my work. Poitou change to note to may be from Near ... The main surviving early register is Port Royal and some want everyone to be living there. I have butted heads with people who because some of the children of the East Coast families were baptized at Port Royal (usually at age of several months) even though the families are in the surviving census on the East coast. La Rochelle as marriage place for Michel Boudrot & Michel Aucoin, was changed to a note Maybe... , The ships of that period sailed from La Rochelle and their first surviving child was born the next year so it is ASSUMED they were married JUST before departure. As we now have more of the archives in France available online we can probable expect more records to be found. Mona gets notified when new "Acadien en France" records are found & she shares them. There are few if any differences in the DGFA & Famille de Michel Boudrot. The book carries forward to families formed by 1780. Port Royal - After the original men moved across Fundy Bay they reassembled the Habitat on the highland over looking the wide mouth (bay?) of the Dauphine River. As time passed the settlement moved across the river closer to the harbor. During periods of English control the troops very seldom left the fort St-Anne, so we had very little interference with our lifestyle. The families had family compounds all up & down both sides if the river. (Think about the settlement pattern along Bayou Teche or Lafourche. Narrow frontage along the river & the compounds went much farther back. So the families could have buried him on "family land" without having to fool with the English. Does anyone have the map of the families along the river. Paul , -----Original Message----- From: Liz Hall Morgan Hi Paul, May I be picky again? :)  I saw things for my direct lines that caught my attention, as of course, I'm always interested in new info. White doesn't give a place of birth for your #14 & 15 below, Jean Corporon or Francoise Savoie, though it's certainly reasonable to assume Francoise was b. in Port Royal as White estimates her parents' marriage took place there the year before. If someone's found a source for Jean being from Poitou, I'm all ears, though. Jean's burial at "La Croix du Sable" comes from White's note about Jean's burial 12 Feb 1713: v. 1, p. 411, [citing Port Royal parish register]: “buried in a place called ‘the cross of the cape’ serving as a cemetery because the country is subject to the English, so he couldn’t be transported to the cemetery at the top of the River.” I assume he died in Port Royal about the same day, but I don't know the geography... & how close the cemetery was to Port Royal. No marriage place given in White's DGFA for Michel Boudrot/Michelle Aucoin; is this from "Famille de Michel Boudrot"? FYI: Phillipe Mius d'Entremont has a bio here: http://www.biographi.ca/009004-119.01-e.php?&id_nbr=472&interval=25&&PHPSESSID=3mqj5n87ef9balhdhgencuc044 Liz -----Original Message----- From: Liz Hall Morgan OK, just doublechecked my DGFA page copies. Jean is listed as died/buried the same day according to Port Royal registers. The burial note is, I believe, SAW quoting the register, as it comes after the death info & not in the historial notes following the genealogy: "inhumé dans un lieu appellé la croix du cap qui sert de cimetière à cause que le pays est sujet aux Anglais, n'ayant pu le transporter au cimetière du haut de la Rivière." my rough translation is below, not necessarily exact. "subject to the English" might be subjects of or occupied by, or subject to attacks by, perhaps? Would have to look up the date or get a fluent reader to check. hope this helps, Liz

    3. Paul, I'm the same as you. I started tracing Rocky's family in 1970 at the Clayton Library in Houston. Sources were something not talked about and really who would we talk to. No PC's at that time and genealogy was not a popular hobby. I had people in my family and Rocky's say to me "and just why do you want that information" as if I was planning to do some horrible thing. So, a lot of my old information isn't sourced. I didn't buy Stephen White's book as I couldn't afford to put out that much money especially when I was the only one in his family interested in genealogy. Liz, You and Rocky are connect. His direct Boudreaux line comes from Charles Boudreaux and Marie Corporon. 3. Rocky does have a Lord but no Amirault. I'm sure there are others he doesn't have but just can't remember them at this time. While researching Rocky's maternal first cousin's paternal side. the farther back I went I learned this cousin has a Talon line. The cousin comes from the youngest son, Robert, and LaSalle was his godfather. This was so exciting for me since I grew up in Texas. Brought back memories of history classes and LaSalle's adventures and death. I was sorry that Rocky didn't have a Talon line. Hi All, We may have moved on to other names or the following info isn't needed but here is something I found in my files that I did in May 2010 while reseraching Rocky's maternal first cousin's paternal lines. I found Pierre Allain's surname spelled Bijeau b. about 1668 [the source Ancestry and someone's tree]. The Acadian Gray web site listed Pierre's death date as 1708 in Minas. The surnames for he and Isabelle Melancon's children were spelled Bijeau except for Alain married to Madeleine Boudreaux and his was spelled Bugeaud [source Acadian Museum, West Pubnico, Nova Scotia]. Anyway, just some info that may help or confuse the issue. I hope it helps someone.
