Brother Bernard was not able to get farther back from this point. . Honorius Lord and Apolline Garceau were married in exile in New England around 1765. I do not know the actual date. The marriage was validated in Canada on 29 September, 1767. Brother Bernard listed the birth locations of the five children with Apolline Garceau as all in exile in New England. The Acadians were given grant to return to Quebec, Canada in 1767. Many indviiduals, as with this couple, settled south of Montreal around LaPairre and L'Acadie. This couple, as noted, were in Canada to have their marriage validated in September 1767. This opens to question I think where these last four children were born (approximate birth years 1770-1779). The baptismal records were not found for those children by Brother Bernard, so New England is possible. Suggesting New England is the fact that Brother Bernard found conditional basptismal records at L'Aacdie, Quebec for oldest two of these children in July 1787. Their actual birth dates were given in the baptismal record. The baptismal records, some marriage and burial records were found and transcribed by Brother Bernard for the children by Susanne Lafaille and Marguerite Babin. I did not transcribe myself. Thanks Diane & Bob Everything applies to all of us does it not? This is rewritten every year. -----Original Message----- From: Diane Szabo Posting this for my good friend, Bob Schwarz. French-Canadians New Years Resolutions Apparently many of our Québécois ancestors in the past made New Years resolutions along the following lines. Zut alors, they did it to confuse and confound us later researchers of family information: 1. No man is truly well-educated unless he learns to spell his name at least three different ways within the same document. I resolve to give the appearance of being extremely well-educated in the coming year. 2. I will also be totally inconsistent in the use of my dit name. 3. I resolve to see to it that all of my children will have the same given names that my ancestors and cousins have used for six generations in a row. 4. My age is no one's business but my own. I hereby resolve to never list my age or birth year the same way twice on any document. 5. I resolve to have each of my children baptized in a different church or in a different parish. Every third child will not be baptized at all or will be baptized by an itinerant missionary who keeps no records. 6. If a child should die, I will give the next child born the same name. Also, girls will all be named Marie-something. Joseph-something will be good for boys. 7. I resolve that if my beloved wife Marie-Catherine should die, I will marry another Marie-Catherine. I will see that she write her name as Marie, Marie-Catherine, Catherine, and Catherine-Marie in different documents. 8. I will name all the children of my second marriage with the same names as the children of my first marriage. Thus each Jean-Baptiste will have several brothers and half-brothers as well as cousins and other relatives, plus moi, named Jean-Baptiste, all with the same surname. Again, I will see that they all be inconsistent in the use of a dit name.) 9. I resolve to give each of my children at least five first names--i.e. Jean-Pierre-Michel-Télesphore-Antoine, and encourage them use a different name or names for baptism, confirmation, marriage and death. 10. If I emigrate to the U.S. I resolve to move to a new town, new county, or new state at least once every 10 years just before those pesky census enumerators come around asking silly questions. 11. I will make every attempt to reside in counties and towns where no vital records are maintained or where the courthouse burns down every few years. 12. I will join an obscure religious cult that does not believe in record keeping or in participating in military service. 13. If a census enumerator does come to my door, I will loan him my pen, which has been dipped in rapidly fading blue ink. I will also find that I can only guess at my childrens ages and even their names. 14. I will not take pictures of the family. If I do, I will not identify the people in the photos. If anyone does not know who the people are, they have no business nosing through the album. 15. I will not make a will. Sacré bleu who needs to spend money on a lawyer? 16. I resolve that if my family emigrates to still another country, some of us will use our original surname, some will use the dit name only, some will use both, and some will choose another surname, totally unrelated. 17. Finally, I resolve that when I die, my tombstone will be made of soft stone with shallow engraving so that it will be sure to weather away as quickly as possible and become ILLEGIBLE. This will be done to confuse cemetery transcribers and force them to list my grave as UNKNOWN. Bob Schwarz [email protected]
Subject: 10 October 2015 Reunion - Les Guédry et Petitpas d'Asteur Bonjour Cousins, Next Guédry et Petitpas Reunion - Saturday, 10 October 2015 at Henderson, Louisiana We have reserved the large, covered pavilion at Henry Guidry Park in Henderson, Louisiana on Saturday, 10 October 2015 for our next Guédry et Petitpas Reunion. This is in the heart of Guidry country in southwest Louisiana. We are in the planning stages at this time, but more details will be forthcoming in the next few months. Henderson, Louisiana is located about 12 miles east of Lafayette, Louisiana and is at the edge of the Atchafalaya Swamp. It is just off interstate highway I-10 at Exit 115. Henderson is approximately 9 miles southeast of Breaux Bridge, Louisiana. Shortly after the Great Flood of 1927 Henry Guidry and his family left their home at Atchafalaya, Louisiana and resettled near the railroad stop at Lenora, Louisiana. Here he opened a restaurant. Shortly afterwards, he moved his restaurant and family a little closer to the river and founded the settlement later to be called Henderson, Louisiana. At Guidry's Place (the name of his combined restaurant and dance hall), Henry Guidry began serving crawfish dishes and the public loved it. HIs wonderful chef Gladys Breaux developed and prepared many of the tasty dishes. Henry brought crawfish to the world stage - prior to this they had been eaten by the Acadians in Louisiana, but only at homes. Guidry's Place eventually evolved into Pat's Fisherman's Wharf Restaurant which is still serving crawfish today. Henry's brother, Edwin 'Mulate' Guidry, was a crawfish marketer, catching the tasty crustaceans in the Atchafalaya Swamp. Mulate later opened the Rendevouz Club near Henderson and then moved his Club to Breaux Bridge. Here he renamed it Mulate's and began a restaurant famous for its crawfish dishes and live Cajun dance music. Today Mulate's Restaurant in Breaux Bridge is known as Pont Breaux's (aka Breaux's Bridge). October is a wonderful time in Louisiana with cooling temperatures, mild weather patterns and has the least rain of any month. Besides the many historic sites in the Lafayette area such as Acadian Village, Vermilionville Folk Life Park, Jean Lafitte National Historical Park's Acadian Cultural Center, the Alexander Mouton Home Museum, the St. John the Evangelist Catholic Cathedral with its historic cemetery and live oak tree, the Acadian Memorial in St. Martinsville and the towns of Abbeville and Opelousas, there are also two major events occurring in mid-October 2015. The Festivals Acadiens et Créoles (a large music, food and crafts festival) will be in Lafayette (Girard Park) on 9-11 October 2015 and the second Grand Réveil Acadien (Great Acadian Awakening) will have events throughout South Louisiana during 3-12 October 2015. We are still in the early planning stages of our Guédry et Petitpas Reunion, but it will be a bit different than previous reunions. It will be outdoors along the edge of the Atchafalaya Swamp. It will be a more relaxed setting with lots of time to mingle, meet everyone, exchange family history and stories and enjoy the area. We will not have a formal agenda as in the past with only one or two short activities planned. We may have a local Cajun band from our family play a little music during the day. We will have local family chefs prepare a series of Cajun dishes for our noon dinner. The Reunion will be free to all although we will have to charge a small amount for the optional meal (approximately $7-9 per person). For those coming by plane - the Louis Armstrong New Orleans International Airport is approximately 115 miles east of Henderson, LA on interstate highway I-10, the Baton Rouge Metropolitan Airport is approximately 60 miles east of Henderson, LA on interstate highway I-10 and the Lafayette Regional Airport is approximately 15 miles west of Henderson, LA. Lafayette, LA is a medium-sized city of 125,000 people with lots of nice motels, hotels and bed and breakfast facilities. Lafayette, Breaux Bridge, Abbeville and Henderson have many fine restaurants. I will be sending out a Registration Form in the near future as we will need to know how many folks will attend to have adequate seating and to prepare enough meals. So set aside the first half of October to be in south Louisiana for the Grand Réveil Acadien, the Festival Acadiens et Creoles and the Guédry et Petitpas Reunion. We'll all have a great time enjoying our culture and being with our cousins from throughout North America. In Eastman We of course have a lot less because of our repeats. Eastmen mentions what I am sure is from his Acadians from the St-John valley in Maine/NB. ============== How Many Genetic Ancestors Do You Have? Bob Jenkins has published an interesting article concerning the origins of your DNA. As he writes: “The number of genealogical ancestors you have n generations is 2n: 2 parents, 4 grandparents, 8 great-grandparents, and so forth. The only way to have fewer is if some of them are the same person. (For example, I have two great-great-great-great grandparents who are also my great-great-great-great-great grandparents by another line.) “The difference between genealogical...
Thanks Paul & Eula, Jacques Jacob Bourgeois was my 8th Great Grandfather. I will add this to his family history in my FTM program. I stood their on that hallowed ground and looked out over the Bay of Fundy when I was in Nova Scotia for the CMA. It was a very touching moment for me.
