The story takes place between New Orleans and Paris in the spring and summer of 1848. It is a departure from his previous novels which were set in Louisiana during the War Between the States and the aftermath, and in the Ohio valley of the 1760's at the end of the French and Indian War and the beginning of Pontiac’s Rebellion.
