    1. [ACADIAN] Petit Pas list
    2. dcotorceanu via
    3. Dear Paul: Yes, please sign me up for the list. I am not on anything like that and do not get the newsletter and mailings, but would love to. Thank you for asking. I have wanted to attend one of the gatherings for AGES but have never been at the right place at the right time. I lived in Switzerland for 10 years and then have been traveling for the past one. This October, unfortunately, I will be in London. Soon we will be settling down more and splitting our time between PA and Cape Breton. I look forward to finding roots again. I would be honoured to represent, in some small way, the Petitpas from Cap La Ronde, Isle Madame. All the best to you and all the cousins, Deborah Date: Mon, 20 Jul 2015 19:57:28 -0400 > To: [email protected] <mailto:[email protected]> > CC: [email protected] <mailto:[email protected]>; [email protected] <mailto:[email protected]>; [email protected] <mailto:[email protected]> > Subject: Re: [ACADIAN] Acadian & Metis > From: [email protected] <mailto:[email protected]> > > > One of my Marguerite Petitpas lines is through Claude Guedry; the other three Martin Dugas. > Are you planning to attend the Guedry/Petitpas reunion in Henderson Louisiane in October? 3. Gordon, thanks! Louis and Marie Louise are my maternal 5th Great Grandparents, and up to now I've had zero success finding anything re: Louis's family. You and Jim's research gives me a different direction to look in. Thanks again! Keith Lorando -----Original Message----- From: Gordon Bonnet via Sent: Monday, July 20, 2015 11:38 AM To: [email protected] Subject: [ACADIAN] Exnicios discovery Hi y’all, Some of you might descend from the (non-Acadian) Exnicios family of SE Louisiana. The origins of the family have been sought for a long time, and a cousin may have found them. The earliest Exnicios, Louis, was a doctor, from “Oprichain,” Germany, and married Marie Louise Pontiff in 1798 in Edgard. We had decided some time ago that “Oprichain” was probably Obrigheim, a town in Rhineland-Palatinate, Hesse, Germany. A cousin of mine Jim Exnicios, found records in two places of a Ludwig Schnitzius, a Hessian solder who was a hired mercenary fighting for the English in the Revolutionary War. Ludwig was made a prisoner of war in 1779 and defected in 1780 to the Spanish army in New Orleans. So we have the name similarity (Schnitzius is a pretty uncommon name), and the right-place-at-the-right-time thing… … but best of all, Ludwig’s birthplace is listed as Obrigheim. I think we have a pretty good case that Exnicios was originally Schnitzius, and Ludwig and Louis were one and the same. In the baptismal record of Louis’s son, Jean Louis, the baby’s parents (i.e. Louis’s parents) are listed as “George Exnicios” and “Catherine Barbara Staaelman.” I think we should start looking for a George Schnitzius and Catherine Barbara Stallman, Stahlman, etc. — from Hesse. Hope this is useful to someone! cheers, Gordon p.s. Here are the websites where you can check out the information on Ludwig. http://www.lagis-hessen.de/en/subjects/xsearch/pageSize/50/page/2/sn/hetrina?q=YToxOntzOjM6Im9reiI7czo1OiJENjcxOSI7fQ== <http://www.lagis-hessen.de/en/subjects/xsearch/pageSize/50/page/2/sn/hetrina?q=YToxOntzOjM6Im9reiI7czo1OiJENjcxOSI7fQ==> http://freepages.military.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~amrevhessians/wd.htm <http://freepages.military.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~amrevhessians/wd.htm> . ------------------------------- To check our Archive http://archiver.rootsweb.com/th/index/acadian/ ------------------------------- To subscribe to the list, please send an email to [email protected] with the word 'subscribe' without the quotes in the subject and the body of the message. 3. Great explanation, Paul. I was not aware of the distinction between w and W. Would you mind sharing your Ameriindian lines with us? I'd love to know. I know for sure I have Marie Therese married to Claude Petitpas through their daughter Judith in my father's Burke line. I have several more, but they may be questionable. I'd be interested to see if we intersect anywhere. I do know I show up as having 2% NA on one DNA testing with a further 4% Siberian and 3% NA on another, which leads me to believe that more than Marie Therese has contributed. Also, is there anyone out there with ties to LeCoutre or LeFebre/LeFevre in Nova Scotia via the Channel Islands? This is my paternal great grandmother's line. She was Elizabeth Goswell/Cogswell married to Aime Landry. I've been told her parents were George Goswell (with possible early US American ancestors??) and Jane LeCoutre. I don't think they ever married. But I am interested in Jane's parents. Hope everyone is havivng a great summer. I won't complain about the heat to my LA cousins, but I've been in Paris this summer and it has been hot as blazes. Leaving for Halifax and Cape Breton on Wednesday and I KNOW it will be cooler there!! 1. [ACADIAN] Exnicios discovery
    2. Gordon Bonnet via
    3. Hi y’all, Some of you might descend from the (non-Acadian) Exnicios family of SE Louisiana. Here are the websites where you can check out the information on Ludwig. http://www.lagis-hessen.de/en/subjects/xsearch/pageSize/50/page/2/sn/hetrina?q=YToxOntzOjM6Im9reiI7czo1OiJENjcxOSI7fQ== <http://www.lagis-hessen.de/en/subjects/xsearch/pageSize/50/page/2/sn/hetrina?q=YToxOntzOjM6Im9reiI7czo1OiJENjcxOSI7fQ==> http://freepages.military.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~amrevhessians/wd.htm <http://freepages.military.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~amrevhessians/wd.htm>

    3. We Acadian have many many relatives that married "Micmaq" so your ancestors sibs can be almost certain to have related lines. We usually say Micmaq but they can be from all the "tribes" from Maine, through Quebec and up to NewFoundland. metis (lower M) are individuals of mixed heritage who meet a 6 part test. The main ones is to belong to a metis community & share their lifestyle. Metis (Capital M) are Canadian Government recognized communities west of Ontario. I personally have six Amerindian lines before 1710. You will find you have more in common with other "Early French in North America" than your "english" neighbors who you have lived next to for generations. Enough of my high horse. Paul -----Original Message----- From: Leslie Johnson CPC As a beginner, I have been wondering about that. Due to the nature of our ancestors and marrying with the Mi'kmaqs, is it possible that many of us metis? I've seen some indications in the lines, but how do we know for sure? Thanks, Leslie LeBrun Johnson

    3. Thanks, Maurice LeBlanc shared them with me years ago but I found awkward to work with. I use my link or ancestry so I can print just the family I am interested in. Remember to look in Vol 1 for before 1700 and the other vols for later entries. I have less than 100 pages in two binders for All my Quebecois ancestor families. -----Original Message----- From: Leslie Johnson Thank you very much for this excellent link. I was able to download a number of resource materials this way. Leslie LeBrun Johnson

    3. I used these books in the early 1970's at Clayton Library in Houston, Texas. Still have my handwritten copies as Ms. Ulmer, head librarian, wouldn't allow pages from old books to be copied on the copy machine. She said it would ruin the pages. How times have changed. 3. As a beginner, I have been wondering about that. Due to the nature of our ancestors and marrying with the Mi'kmaqs, is it possible that many of us metis? I've seen some indications in the lines, but how do we know for sure? 3. Agreed - I like the online look-ups best. I don't print these things, though. As you're probably finding out, not enough ink! LOL! The more I find, the more there is to find! I am researching the Quebecois ancestors (Acadians from my father's side) like you and also Quakers (my mother's side). Ancestry has the most information. Do you stop in your own direct line? I find that many do, but to understand more about the people I like to look at some of their brothers and sisters.
