I do not know my biological father other than his name. I was always told as a child that when my family came from Germany, Americans could not pronounce the German name and shortened it. This is the only German name I can find that has the Abla and remotely sounds similar. I'm 25yrs old and know virtually nothing on my father's side. If you have any thoughts or info I would really appreciate it!!! :) Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. PFC Andregg is not a family member of mine. I am a volunteer trying to locate living relatives of our unaccounted-for heroes so that I can put them in touch with the Service Casualty Officer of their respective branch to make a family reference sample (FRS, or DNA) donation. The ultimate goal is to positively identify the remains of these soldiers in order to bring them home. Any assistance which you may be able to provide would be greatly appreciated. He was born in Bern, Switzerland. I think came to America in 1877 and worked in coal mine near Ridgeway, PA. He was the father of Adolph Ulrich (Jack) Abplanalp (b 2/9/1885), who then fathered Bern Adolph Abplanalp (1914-1955), who fathered my grandmother Anne Abplanalp (now Ruth). I just don't know where to start looking. Thank you! P.S. And if anyone knows anything about the coal mines near Ridgeway, PA, that would be cool, too! 2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Author: JohnDavid78 Surnames: Abplanalp Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.abplanalp/99.1.1.1.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Wow that's a new one! I've done extensive research on the Abplanalp family as it my maternal family line, and I have traced the family back to it's origins in Brienz, Bern, Switzerland. And in no records I've ever seen or read is there any mention of any link to royalty of any kind, so if you have corroborating data to that effect I'd sure love to see it, or have the link to it, to research further. The accepted story of the family origins is as follows and is (amazingly enough) corroborated with a newspaper article of the time (unfortunately I don't have a copy); The Abplanalp name comes from history, and a story told by generations in Switzerland. Canton Bern Switzerland, where the Alp's rise high into the sky, the mountain was called called "Planalp", with the higher peak called Bronzer Peak. The "Planalp" peak began to crumble and slide down the mountain, destroying everything in its way. A small village was in it's path called "Husstatt" which then was carried into "Lake Brienz" at the foot of the mountain. Two days after the catastrophe, a baby's crib was found floating amongst the wreckage. The "only" living survivor of the horrific events. With no one to know who the child was, the towns people called the child "Abplanalp". As the "Ab" stands for (off) and the "planalp" meaning the Alp's. So therefore the name means " Off the Alp's" With people immigrating into the US some of them dropped the "Ab" and stayed with the "Planalp" others just dropped the "b" as others kept the entire surname. Everyone with either name are the direct relation to the young male child found in Brienz Switzerland. Any other origins of the name may come from a entirely separate family line to which all the Abplanalp's I know of are unrelated, but anything is possible in this big wide world. At any rate I hope this is helpful to anyone trying to find their roots in the Abplanalp name. On another note the name Katherine and it's variations were a common name among the Abplanalp's and other families from Brienz and the surrounding villages. And as is prone to happen in secluded and isolated communities especially back in the days before motorized travel, virtually everyone in the area is related, and families passed on names of loved ones generationally, keeping them alive through history. Author: gramargo Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.abplanalp/31.1.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: I checked my file of notes and rechecked online for anything new on the Bostelman family, and think I may have figured it out. I found a marriage record for Edward Abplanalp and Mary Bostelman, both residents of Chino, in Los Angeles Co., CA, on 27 Aug 1891. She was born in October, 1871 in Ohio, supposedly Defiance County, and I found two brothers who ended up in CA as well as a probable sister with whom one brother was living in 1900 in Nebraska. Brother Charles Henry's passport application shows his father as Henry, while brother William's death index record shows his mother's maiden name as Myer (elsewhere as Meyer). I found a Henry Bostelman, age 14, on a ship's manifest in 1852 with parents Henry and Margrette, possibly the right Henry. There were a couple of Mary Meyers of the right age on manifests, one coming to Baltimore in 1840 and the other to New Orleans in 1845 with parents Charles and Catherine Meyer. Both Henry and Mary were from Germany. I haven't been able to find them in the census, however. Most of this information I have found on Ancestry.com.
