Hi list My first time here. I have Mary Johnston a Widow and children coming to Ausralia in 1863. Her husband John was a seaman. He is in 1851 Census but not 1861. So he has died between the census. Trying to find out when . They had children in Peterhead Aberdeen . and Glasgow Lanarkshire. Mary was born abt 1816 in Limerick Ireland. Her name was Mary Lane. Trying to find their marriage. Any help would be great. Kind Regards Judy Beggs Australia

He would be omitted from the 1861 Census if he was at sea on Census night, as only people actually present are counted. How is Mary Johnston listed in the 1861 Census? Is she shown as a wife or a widow? That would be a more reliable guide as to whether he was still alive. > Trying to find out when . > They had children in Peterhead Aberdeen . and Glasgow Lanarkshire. > Mary was born abt 1816 in Limerick Ireland. > Her name was Mary Lane. Trying to find their marriage. If he survived until 1855, and subsequently died in Scotland, then it should be possible to find the event on ScotlandsPeople. There will have been numerous "John Johnston(e)s", but you can cross-check against the name of his widow. Where was the family in 1851? Where was Mary in 1861? What are the birthplaces and birth dates of any of the children? There may be other records which could help, but most of them are indexed by parish. Gavin Bell
