Angela I know that you said you looked for the death of John Geddes in Scotlandspeople but did you do your search in "minor records" marine returns? There is a page there from the "Returns of Death at Sea" with a John Geddes age 58 which would give a birth date of 1864 which ties in with the census info from Howard. However report indicates he was "Scotch" and born in Banff! It also says he died from concussion of the brain caused by a fall whilst having a fit. Worth considering.
