    3. Hi All, Can anyone please tell me what the following means. It is on the St Nicholas burial records. 13/02/1787 Teresa Buyers spouse to Jas. Stewart touncr. What would a tuoncr. be ???? Glad of any suggestions Thanks Wendy -----Original Message----- From: Wendy Burns Sent: Wednesday, March 26, 2014 3:02 PM To: Aberdeen List Subject: Re: [ABERDEEN] James STEWART and Jane "Jean" SIM m.1801 Aberdeen Sorry to cause confusion Ray but Richard is my partner and is helping me with this research. All the best Wendy -----Original Message----- From: Wendy Burns Sent: Wednesday, March 26, 2014 12:50 PM To: Aberdeen List Subject: Re: [ABERDEEN] James STEWART and Jane "Jean" SIM m.1801 Aberdeen Hi Ray, Thank you again for the in depth analysis, all very helpful in my quest. I have also found a James Stewart c27-11-1775 in St Nicholas, Aberdeen who was the son of a James Stewart and Teresea (Tresia;Terresia) BUYERS (Byers;Byres; Byars). All these variations are used at some point in her life :) In my haste I omitted perhaps the most important piece of information that I have on the marriage of James STEWART and Jane SIM. I said that Jane's father was given as John SIM and perhaps the only reason the father's name was given is because the marriage is said to have taken place in the house of the bride's father (John SIM) a wool comber of Aberdeen and performed by the Rev. Mr. Doig of the Trinity Chapel of Ease. It also states that James Stewart was a soldier in the Aberdeen Fencibles at the time of marriage. I have since found an Army record of a James STEWART who was in the Fencibles from 1799-1803 and then signed up in the 2nd Battalion, 59th Foot Regiment in 1812 at age 37 and was a labourer at the time. This James was said to have been discharged due to illness (asthma and rheumatism contracted while on service in Spain) at age 41 and the record shows that he served from 1812-1816 (that would make James STEWART c27-11-1775 a good candidate). Unfortunately there is no mention of next of kin or parents but nonetheless a great find. Even if one of these is right, proving it is a bit hard. The next thing to consider is whether the birth of Helen and the birth of either of the above two Jameses is at the same place. In those days, people tended to stay near the family home, often in it. Of course either the wife or the husband had to move but it is likely the man will stay at home to help his father on the land. Although he was a labourer, the family would have at least a small patch of land to grow their own crops on [with a tithe going to the landlord]. I'm not sure how much land went with a home in Old Machar in the late 18C, but they probably had use of some land nearby, either a sort of back garden or a strip somewhere. Regarding the ref to John SIM, you are quite lucky to have any reference to family on a marriage record. I know St Nicholas ministers could be very wordy on the records but that was unusual and is probably because St Nicholas was the most senior kirk in the county. Other ministers and parish clerks were positively stingy in the marriage records, most just naming the couple's names. There can be other possible clues. If you can examine the whole film around Helen's birth, you may find James STEWART as a witness to births, and if the other witness[es] are also STEWARTs they could be family members. It isn't an easy option but we have found a number of one family acting as witnesses, possibly they were elders, and it helped us identify who was about at the time. One last idea: try to see if the Kirk Session Minutes around the birth or marriage are available in the National Archives in Edinburgh. This might be informative though I wouldn't be too hopeful. We found one of our lot was up before them for fornication and there is a note that his father was also being arraigned for the same fault [not the same girl though] at the same time [no record of that session]. Neither girl registered a birth later that year so we got little from that nugget apart from the frisson! Keep trying. You never know when a break-through is going to happen. Bearing in mind that the "St Nicholas Burial Records" as available on the ANESFHS Databank are based on transcriptions of what was originally handwritten data, not all of which was very clear, I would guess it might be "townkeeper" which was a sort of watchman or constable. But the best way to check would be to raise a query to Aberdeen City and Shire Archives who hold the original documents and could check the reading. Gavin Bell (who indexed the St Nicholas Deaths, but did not do all the transcriptions).
