    1. [ABERDEEN] SHERRIFS/SHIRREFS/SHIRRES etc

    3. Goldie, I know why you're confused. I've been trying to work this out for years. There are two (or more) John Lumsden SHIRREFS - As far as John Lumsden SHIRREFS is concerned, this from History of the Society of Advocates in Aberdeen by John Alexander Henderson (1912) "Eldest son of George Barclay, afterwards Lumsden Shirrefs of Blairmormond and Knowsie, Lonmay, and Margaret SMITH, his wife. Alumnus, Marischal College 1807-08, apprenticed to Francis GORDON (1796). Sometime in partnership with Robert ALCOCK, firm being Shirrefs and Alcock. Succeeded to Blairmormond and Knowsie. Died, unmarried 11 May 1852, age 57". For the story about Craig and other properties, Blairmormond and Knowsie, Lonmay google The Gordons of Craig and you'll get an article by Bulloch in proceedings of the historical society from 1929 that tells you. I still cannot work out who is related to who and there was a lot of adopting patronymics. There is another John Lumsden SHIRREFS b. 16 Dec 1867 Tunnerhall House, Ellon whose father (James Francis Gordon SHIRREFS married Barbara Shirrefs SMITH 12 Dec 1861 and lived at Craig, Auchindoir) adopted the patronymic GORDON when he succeeded as Laird of Craig, so became James Francis Gordon SHIRREFS-GORDON. There were 14 children of this marriage (closest to Isabel is Margaret Isabella Barclay SHIRREFS b. 11 Sept 1866 d.1889). John Lumsden SHIRREFS became John Lumsden SHIRREFS-GORDON for a time - some of the children reverted to SHIRREFS, some dropped the SHIRREFS and remained GORDON, others SHIRREFS-GORDON. If any one else can sort them out, I would be eternally grateful. Robin
