Hi all, I am researching the Grant family of Gartly. In the 1841 census I have Francis Grant aged 65 (b. about 1776) living at "Drumbulg" with sons George b. 1816 at Gartly and Francis b. about 1818. I have been transcribing the LDS Film for the parish registers for Gartly (Film No. 993187) and have been unable to find either of the son's baptisms. Can anyone tell me whether there was another church in the parish at the time? I was also unable to find a baptism in 1776 for Francis in this parish. Any help much appreciated. Kind regards, Carol
Carol - My great-great aunt Maria Jane Horne of Gartly was married to William Grant of Stodfold, Gartly whom I believe was one of the sons of your Francis Grant. My third cousin James Grant (whom I believe may be a member of this mailing list) has a website at http://www.kinnethmont.co.uk/. Number of Dissenting families, 10; of persons, 34; Episcopalian,1; Roman Catholic,1; of families, in which persons attending the Established Church and dissenters are nearly equal, 9. ... With the exception of prayer meetings, of which there are five or six in the parish, there are no societies for religious purposes established in the parish, as it is near Huntly, where there are flourishing Bible and missionary societies..." I would interpret this as meaning that there was not, within the parish, a large enough group of non-adherents to the Kirk of Scotland to form the sort of congregation which might have maintained an independent Register of baptisms. The only "dissenting" congregations (ie splinter groups from the Kirk of Scotland) in either Gartly or Huntly for which Registers have survived date from the "Disruption" of the 1840s. There are some Catholic Registers for St Margaret's, Huntly, starting in 1742, which I think may now be included in ScotlandsPeople. >I was also unable to >find a baptism in 1776 for Francis in this parish. > > It may be, of course, that they were all born in a different parish. If you can find any of them in the 1851 Census, that will give you their parish of birth. But of course, some baptisms were simply never included in the Registers. Gavin Bell
