Absolutely - I traced a whole branch of my family who were named after a doctor-midwife (all his 3 names were given to the child with only our surname tacked on the end)...I can only assume he delivered the first of that name! Potentially a child could be named after anyone prominent or who offered a special service to that family at a time of need.
