Be prepared for a NIL return if your ancestor was born in the 1843-1854 period. The reason is that something like half the population had switched to the Free Church of Scotland in 1843, and most of the Free Church registers are not indexed. Most of the OPRs do NOT include Free Church baptisms, although a few do. From 1855, civil registration ensured that EVERY birth was registered in the one system. Gordon.
