Hi Goldie You said "I would suggest looking for a marriage registration or investing in a marriage certificate. This will also tell you who their parents were, where they married and their ages". Do you think that this would apply to an OPR going back to 1818?. The reason I ask is that I have a copy of the registration of the marriage of my Gt-Gt-Grandparents who were married in Inverurie in 1818 but all it gave was their names on a list with a lot of other couples married on other dates about the same time. According to the 1841 Census my GT.Gt.Grandfather was about 25 years older than his wife and he was born outside of Census County, he died before the 1851 Census so I have no idea of where he was born. I tried looking for an OPR death but nothing. Adeline
I think (I hope) I said at the beginning of the message that Civil Registration began in 1855.....so, for example, if you had someone born previously and married in 1855 or after you would that info on Scotlands People, most likely, if they were Church of Scotland members. Before that you need to see the Old Parish Records films for the parish. And, not all are intact. Do some investigating at familysearch.org to see what years are covered in the parish you need. 1818 you need to rely on the Old Parish Records, but if you are looking for someone in that time frame and post a message on this site (supposing it's Aberdeenshire) complete with places, names and dates, there are so many folks who will be happy to help you out. You may even find someone searching the same family. I still cannot believe, and I bet you will be amazed, at all the good folks out there who roll up their sleeves and help.
