Hi Listers, I would like others opinion on the following- In 1832, James Duff. b. 1814, emigrated to Canada and settled in Beckwith Township, Upper Canada. In 1843, William Duff from Perthshire emigrated to Canada with his wife, eight children, a children's governess and his unmarried sister, Janet. William's family lived with James until William built his own house next door on the same concession road. I searched for any trace of the sister, Janet, in Canada without success. I then assumed she had died on board - that is until this week. Our family have a webpage and a guest book. We received a message in the guest book from a man who wondered if he was related to us. He has a couple of letters written by James' son, David, to his uncle David in Scotland. The letter mentions that his mother Jane, came to Canada at the same time as William Duff's family. The letters contain a lot of information relevant to both families. The 1851 and 1861 Canadian census list Jane, his mother, residing with him and his family. The 1841 Scottish census list Janet as unmarried and living in a household other than Duff. Both these Duff families intermarry with a family of Rattrays. Documents say Jane died in 1862. Nothing is found on Janet. Is it possible that Jane and Janet are the same person? I hope this is clear. thank you for any help. Kathleen
Go to Automated Genealgy.com and if you scroll down you will see the 1852 CAD census.....check it out. It was done in 1851 but not published until '52..so they call it the 1852 census. Also there is a Ontario Vital Statistics Project, (google it) and if you know in what County in Ontario they lived, you may find some births, marriages, etc. It works also if you don't know the county, but it is a bit labor intensive, but one find would be worth it. If you find any that came to BC, I can get the certificates for you, Good luck, Goldie ----- Original Message ----- From: "Kathleen Ogg-Moss" <koggmoss@gmail.com> To: "Aberdeen List" <aberdeen@rootsweb.com>; <Perthshire@rootsweb.com> Sent: Wednesday, December 16, 2009 5:12 PM Subject: [ABERDEEN] Duff > Hi Listers, > > I would like others opinion on the following- > In 1832, James Duff. b. 1814, emigrated to Canada and settled in Beckwith > Township, Upper Canada. > In 1843, William Duff from Perthshire emigrated to Canada with his wife, > eight children, a children's governess and his unmarried sister, Janet. > William's family lived with James until William built his own house next > door on the same concession road.
