You need to see the relevant film for Belhelvie, it may give you the name of the croft or place he was from, and some witnesses. The earliest census that I know of is 1854, although I have been told there are some places where there are earlier ones. You are dealing with 1747+ here......not too many records this side of the water in Canada. If he is b 174+ he would have been dead by 1854.....I would try searching for GARDEN on the 1854 and look for some old folks who would have given their birthplace as Canada West or East.
