Hi Jim, With regards to the Moray connections of my Mathesons/Mathiesons - George Matheson had a son by Isabel Swanson in Huntley - Born 1813 and named George. I believe that George was a Currier and possibly from Elgin. I have also found George and Isabel's marriage in Elgin in Dec. 1820. It seems like a long difference in time, so something tells me that there must have been an intervention there. I have not been able to find any other children or references to George Matheson and Isabel Swanson. The son, George, was married to Margaret Smith in New Spynie in 1836. Margaret was a daughter of James Smith, Glover and Miller at Bridge End on the current walking bridge between the library in Elgin and Bishop's Mills. Since George was a Flesher and Skinner, I would assume that he may have been apprenticed to James Smith or would certainly have known him through the leather trade. There children Ann Margaret, James, George, William, and Robert (My G Grandfather) were born in Bishops Mills and their children John, Margaret, Barbara, Elizabeth, and Alexander were born in Aberdeen. It seems that their migration to Aberdeen might have come about the time that James Smith retired from the Glover trade. With respect to the spelling of names - I have Matheson for the first George Matheson and Mathieson for his son and family. Interestingly, my g grandfather reverted to Matheson at least when he went into business. He had at least 3 butcher shops in Aberdeen in the latter 19th century and the early years of the 20th century. My sister insists that whiskey and gambling and his death were the reasons for the business failures that followed. We may find a connection somewhere in the Moray Matheson/Mathieson clan. I expect that I am looking for a George Matheson as father to George Matheson. Probably somewhere in the second half of the 1700's with children being born in the 1785 to 1800 time era. I don't know if I can help, but I can add this info to the Mathieson tribe.......I have a Mary Jean Mathieson supposedly born in Peterhead abt 1816 (no record) with parents George Mathison, flesher, and Christina Cramond, on her death record, information given by Christina Mathison, her mother. Her husband is given as Robt Walker, Mariner, and the 5 children are listed. (Mathison/Mathieson and other spellings.) Mary Jean married Robert Walker, seaman, in 1840 also Peterhead and had 5 children with Robert; Robt 1840, George Mathison 1842, Christina Crawford 1844 (no idea where the Crawford came from), Mary Jane 1846, and Alexander 1848. I suspect Robert was lost at sea being a whaler, and his wife Mary Jane died 28 Apr 1855 in Peterhead. I am doing the Peterhead films now #0993353, and 0993354. On there I found some other Mathieson/Mathisons. Christopher, spouse is Jane Hutchison and Neil, spouse is Isabella Grant. On a birth of Christopher's son George Stephen, b 12 Feb 1849 witnesses are James Hutchison and Alexander Mathieson. I couldn't find them on the 1851 census in Peterhead, so I can't add much more. (that was on the freecen@rootsweb). I would think Alexander is a brother to Christopher and Mary Jane, Neil may also be a brother, but no evidence so far.
