There are Cumming's who showed up in Morlach parish BAN., and someone is my GGGgrandmother's tree married one.......I'll dig......I think Carinie parish, ABD off the top of my head. And I also saw Cumming in Peterhead on the last 2 films I did, but not many. I never took them down because I had given up on that extended line. CUMMING......Cairnie parish - John Cumming in this parish and Margaret McCombie, upon a line from the Mortlach parish were proclaimed here May 10 1760. Cairnie and Gartly parishes are not far apart, so the lady who had one in Gartly parish may have the same family. There is a John McCombie in Mortlach at the same time who was a witness to a birth 11 Jul 1763. He was at Coldhome. But there are Cumming's there as well, 1765 Neil McGregor and Janet Cumming in Milltown of Pittyvaich were married. (Pittvaich is very close to Mortlach church, my McGregor's were there in this time frame). There may be more......Goldie ----- Original Message ----- From: "Schani Biermann" <ussenterprise1701@accesscomm.ca> To: <aberdeen@rootsweb.com> Sent: Friday, January 08, 2010 11:55 AM Subject: [ABERDEEN] surname CUMMING > to all listers > > anyone researching this unusual surname? > > i have an Elizabeth Garden who married a _________ Cumming living in in > Old machar Parish ca 1862. Elizabeth Cumming was the "informant" on her father's ROD > > can find nothing else! _____________________________________________ Hi Schani The half brother of one of Sheena's grandfathers had the name John Cumming SMITH. His mother was unmarried and didn't name the father although the use of CUMMING as a middle name is intriguing. It doesn't occur anywhere else on the family tree!. Not much help but equally frustrating! There is no record on the IGI nor on Scotland's People of a marriage of Elizabeth GARDEN to a _____ CUMMING in the period 1855-1870 in the whole of Scotland. I used Soundex so even a re-spelling should have been found. Why do you think they were "married in Old Machar ca 1862? What evidence is there? There are other ways in which a couple can be deemed to be married in Scotland but by 1862 they were still supposed to register the marriage, however irregular it may have been. [Gavin Bell can explain if you need to know.] Without knowing your evidence, it is difficult to research the people. For instance maybe Elizabeth was illegitimate and took her mother's surname. Hence she can appear as Elizabeth CUMMING, daughter, on Her father's death certificate without having to be married. Questions it would help to have answers for include: a] What was her father's name? b] When did he die and at what age? c] How old was she on any census? d] Have you found her on any/all census records? e] Was she at home with her father on any census? f] Presumably there is no OPR record of her birth? And so on. Schani Biermann wrote: > to all listers > > anyone researching this unusual surname? It's not as unusual as all that. The current Aberdeen telephone directory shows about the same number of CUMMINGs as BELLs. That said, it is probably commoner in NE Scotland than elsewhere. A table based on the incidence of Surnames in the 1901 Census (http://www.gro-scotland.gov.uk/files1/stats/01surnames_tablea5.pdf) lists CUMMING as 154th in order of frequency. Its neighbours in the list include BAXTER, MAXWELL, McLACHLAN, STEPHEN and WEBSTER. Gavin Bell
