Suddenly September 1, 1998, beloved husband of Elizabeth (nee Kurtz) Sutton; father of Joseph (Karen) Sutton Jr., Susan (Thomas) Grifasi, Robert F. and Frederick Sutton; grandfather of Jacqueline Sutton-Reese; great grandfather of Julianne Reese; brother of Mary (Ted) Hyde, Jeanette (late James) Wilson and the late Richard (Carol) Sutton. Private funeral services were held at the convenience of the family. Mr. Sutton was a Veteran of WW II. Arrangements by the GRECO FUNERAL HOME INC. Also in the same paper there is a more detailed obituary. Joseph C. Sutton, active in coaching youth sports Joseph C. Sutton, a retired Bethlehem Steel Corp. employee who coached youth sports in the Kenmore-Town of Tonawanda area for decades, died Tuesday (Sept. 1, 1998) in Kenmore Mercy Hospital, Town of Tonawanda, after a brief illness. He was 81. Born in Buffalo, Sutton attended Nardin Academy and Lafayette High School. During World War II, he graduated from Officers Candidate School and served as a captain in the Airborne Division of the Army Rangers. In the early 1960s, Sutton was instrumental in organizing Little League sports in the Town of Tonawanda. He coached football and hockey, leading many teams to championships. "His philosophy was simple: Every boy had a chance to play and be part of the team," said his daughter, Susan Grifasi of Buffalo. "He showed them that they could have fun, learn a skill, play fairly and ultimately win." Sutton and the former Elizabeth Kurtz recently celebrated their 56th wedding anniversary. He also is survived by three sons, Joseph Jr. of Collins, Robert and Frederick; a granddaughter; and a great-granddaughter. Private services will be held in Elmlawn Cemetery, Town of Tonawanda.
